Our New Head Coach Juan Carlos Romero

Juan's better half Viviana recently delivered their first new Romero in into the World and we wish the Romero family the best in raising the newest LYC Opti sailor.

The LYC International Optimist Dingy Program is fortunate to have Juan Carlos Romero as our Head Coach. Originally from Ecuador, Juan Carlos is one of the preeminent Optimist coaches in the world and has been honored to serve as team coach on many International and World regatta teams. Juan coaching style is low key and measured to provide  information to sailors at the moment they are ready to learn it. Juan is one of the best technical coaches in the World and can tune Optimist Sailboats for top performance. Juan has exceptional grasp of rules, race strategy & tactics and has been invaluable at the top end of the LYC coaching program. Much credit goes to Juan for the World Class success many sailors in the LYC Optimist program are enjoying.

LYC Sailing Administrator Lindsay Allen Valasek

Lindsay joined us down in Florida in the winter of 2007 from Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota.  After a year and a half of coaching she took over the sailing program from the former Sailing Director, Ben Williams.  Lindsay grew up sailing Optimists then moved into the Lasers and 420s and also sailed scows on the Inland Lakes of the Midwest.  She coached at Lake Minnetonka Sailing School for 6 summers prior to joining the LYC program.  After graduating college from the University of Saint Thomas with a degree in Psychology and Sociology, she moved down here to work at LYC. In her years at LYC, in addition to working her way up to the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Director Lindsay also met her true love, former Olympian sailor and renowned sailing Coach Marek Valasek. The two married in 2009 and both contribute immensely to the LYC Sailing programs. Since her husband Marek took over as Sailing Director in Spring of 2010, Lindsay is now the administrator for the program.
